While a steep sloping site or sharp drop may seem daunting at first, you soon discover that the many reasons that we choose to build on these unusual and challenging sections. Sloping sections allow the home to capture light effectively and through large windows the home will be flooded with natural light. Another benefit of a sloped section is the ability to create unique spaces such as rooftop pools and sheltered outdoor areas. Then, of course, there is perhaps the most sought after and valuable benefit which is just a short walk to the top of the site that will often result in a breath taking view.

The challenges of sloping sites include access, earthworks, exposure and stability. Access can be an issue when accessing your new home but also for building material delivery though this is nothing that a good project management plan cannot help with. Designing foundations for sloping sites can be intimidating but will often lead to innovative design solutions. There are two main design options when approaching a steep site, the home may adapt to the angle of the slope or create a stark projection by cantilevering, this highlights the contrast between land and built form. In the case of the Howard Road house the designer chose to use huge cantilever beams projecting out over the cliff, this not only looks impressive from the road but also draws those inside the home towards the large windows to soak up those staggering views into the harbour.
